Course Description |
We will dive into how the US government works, both in the past and currently, by looking at the constitution and the roles and responsibilities of the three branches of our federal government. There will be a heavy focus on the amendments and important supreme court cases that affect how the government functions as well as our daily lives. We will also look at state and local governments and discuss our roles as citizens and how we can be involved in shaping the decisions of our government. We will primarily be using the original documents such as the constitution, federalist papers, and supreme court opinions. However, we will also be using the book A User's Guide to Democracy as a reference to help break down some of the often dense legal jargon into something more understandable from a neutral viewpoint. The intersection of faith and politics will necessarily have to be discussed at some points, and those instances will be approached from a Christian worldview while discussing what the law says and how it came to be.
