Course Description |
This intro-level course will give students an understanding of the basic biological world that surrounds them each day of their lives. Lecture topics to be covered include scientific method, cellular biology, chemistry of life, ecology, genetics, and a survey of the kingdoms. Laboratory exercises will include proper techniques of microscope use as we view both fixed slides of plant and animal cells and wet mounts of single-celled organisms, DNA extraction from common fruits, dissections of at least four specimens from within the animal kingdom, and more. An off-campus fieldtrip to the HudsonAlpha Institute in Research Park is also planned, if COVID restrictions have been lifted. Required texts: Exploring Creation with Biology textbook, 3rd edition (Apologia Press) Exploring Creation with Biology Student Notebook, 3rd edition Homework expected 2-3 hours per week. There is a one-time $20 lab fee payable to LCA before the school year starts. This class is worth 1.0 high school credits.

Course Description |
Pre-requisite: Biology, Grades 10-12 Topics to be covered include plate tectonics, salinity & density, waves, tides,different types of ocean zones, marine invertebrates, marine vertebrates, marine ecology, the intertidal zone, estuary communities, coral reefs, continental shelf communities, the deep ocean, and more. Labs will include several hands-on experiments including a shark dissection. An optional trip to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab will be offered in October at an additional cost TBD. Required Texts: Apologia's Exploring Creation with Marine Biology, 2nd Edition; accompanying Student Lab Notebook and tests There is a one-time $20 lab fee payable to LCA before the school year starts.
