Course Description

 

The high school version of Brain Aerobics is similar to a chess club, but with many more games in addition to chess. The Brain Aerobics Class/Club includes elected officers and service projects. The primary focus of Brain Aerobics is to help the students develop their critical thinking skills in a fun and engaging way. Games and critical thinking puzzles will be utilized to work on spatial reasoning, logic, deductive reasoning, and strategic reasoning. The students will learn more than 30 games over the course of the year, but a special emphasis will be placed on chess and learning its strategies and techniques. Each semester will include at least two service projects utilizing games -- one that serves the students of LCA and another that works alongside a local ministry to those in need.

Homework time expected: 0 – 0.5 hrs/week (Club officers & those helping them will occasionally have work to do outside of class.)


This class is worth 0.5 high school credits.

The students will learn 27 games over the course of the year. There will be a special emphasis on chess and chess strategies during the first 5 weeks. Good sportsmanship is a prerequisite.
